Niche Construction Theory in Archaeology: A Critical Review

چکیده
Abstract Over the past decade, niche construction theory (NCT) has been one of fastest-growing theories or scholarly approaches in social sciences, especially within archaeology. It was proposed biological sciences 25 years ago and is often referred to as a neglected evolutionary mechanism. Given its rapid acceptance by archaeological community, it important that scholars consider how being applied look for discrepancies between applications concept. Many critical discussions NCT have already published, but most them are biology journals may be overlooked sciences. In this manuscript, my goal synthesis criticisms NCT, better allowing archaeologists independently evaluate usefulness. I focus on claims novelty differences other conceptualizing anthropogenic ecosystem impacts culture-evolution feedbacks. argue diverse concepts currently included wide-reaching purview not new, terminology useful some scholars. If proponents concept able unify their ideas, serve descriptive function, given lack testable explanatory mechanism, does clear heuristic function.

Niche Construction Theory and Archaeology
Niche construction theory (NCT) is a relatively new development within evolutionary biology, but one that has important implications for many adjacent fields of research, including the human sciences. Here, we present a broad overview of NCT and discuss its application to archaeology. We begin by laying out the basic arguments of NCT, including a historical overview, focusing on how it affects ...
متن کاملThe Niche Construction Perspective: a Critical Appraisal*
Niche construction refers to the activities of organisms that bring about changes in their environments, many of which are evolutionarily and ecologically consequential. Advocates of niche construction theory (NCT) believe that standard evolutionary theory fails to recognize the full importance of niche construction, and consequently propose a novel view of evolution, in which niche constructio...
متن کاملHow geoarchaeology and landscape archaeology contribute to niche construction theory (NCT)
In this paper a review is given of examples of geoarchaeological and landscape archaeological research from four locations throughout Europe. Case-studies from the North Sea coastal zone in the Netherlands and the Eastern Mediterranean are presented to illustrate the potential contribution of geoarchaeology and landscape archaeology to niche construction theory (NCT) studies. Typical landscapes...
متن کاملTHEMATIC ISSUE ARTICLE: CULTURAL NICHE CONSTRUCTION A Cultural Niche Construction Theory of Initial Domestication
I present a general theory for the initial domestication of plants and animals that is based on niche construction theory and incorporates several behavioral ecological concepts, including central-place provisioning, resource catchment, resource ownership and defensibility, and traditional ecological knowledge. This theory provides an alternative to, and replacement for, current explanations, i...
متن کاملTHE QUARTERLY REVIEW of Biology NICHE CONSTRUCTION THEORY: A PRACTICAL GUIDE FOR ECOLOGISTS
Niche construction theory (NCT) explicitly recognizes environmental modification by organisms (“niche construction”) and their legacy over time (“ecological inheritance”) to be evolutionary processes in their own right. Here we illustrate how niche construction theory provides useful conceptual tools and theoretical insights for integrating ecosystem ecology and evolutionary theory. We begin by...
